Virginia is for Lovers

Ironically, it was the couple with the surname Loving who helped to make interracial marriage legal in Virginia. Loving v. Virginia is a landmark, historic case. Richard and Mildred, in the 1950s, challenged the state’s law forbidding black and white individuals from marrying. Their civil rights fight lasted several years, but culminated in their success. Because of their courage, fortitude and perseverance, the Lovings have helped make love accessible to all Virginians. To learn more about this US Supreme Court case to preserve racial integrity, I suggest you read Loving vs Virginia: A Documentary Novel of the Landmark Civil Rights Case by Patrica Hruby Powell. The book brings the story to life with its poetic prose style and also includes a timeline and illustrations.
On May 11th, Virginia Voice brought the world to me with their live audio description of the opera Loving v. Virginia. Presented by the Virginia Opera along with the Richmond Symphony, this was a red carpet world premiere of this first-of-its-kind work. This opera, composed by Damian Geter, tells the American story of racial segregation and civil rights legal success. It was awesome to hear this opera sung in English! I look forward to hearing other people’s experiences with this unique Virginia-artistic creation.
