To the chief Musician upon Gittith, A Psalm of David
O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!
Who hast set thy glory above the heavens.
Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies,
That thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger.
When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers,
The moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;
What is man, that thou art mindful of him?
And the son of man, that thou visitest him?
For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels,
And hast crowned him with glory and honour.
Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands;
Thou hast put all things under his feet:
All sheep and oxen,
Yea, and the beasts of the field;
The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea,
And whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas.
O LORD our Lord,
How excellent is thy name in all the earth!
How Great Thou Art
In the beginning of Psalm chapter eight, David proclaims the greatness of God. He echoes the same words of adoration in the last verse: “Oh LORD, our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth (8:8).”
‘I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty. ‘
With holy reverence for the works of God’s hands, David admires the brilliant Universe, glory above the heavens, the moon and the stars (8:3). David takes us back to the creation story in Genesis chapter one, which describes the miraculous power of God to speak into existence all that has life. We need only to look around us to find evidence of a higher power. God’s glory surrounds us from the heavens above to everything in the natural world and in the animal kingdom.
“Then God created man in his image, a little below the angels. (8:5)” What baffles David is, how could such an awesome God choose to give dominion over all he has created to man? And more than even this, he crowned (8:5) lowly man with dominion over the works of his own hands (8:6). This is beyond our understanding.
When I reflect on the ways mankind has abused, neglected and ravaged our planet, I feel we should all be reminded that all life around us, from the planets to the rivers, mountains and forests, was lovingly created for us by God. All animals, even the eight-legged crawling ones, are a reflection of His glory. As a precious heirloom is handed down, so too have the earth and skies been given to us for safekeeping. I pray that we do better to honor this gesture by cherishing and preserving God’s miraculous creation. And that includes the one that was made in His image, mankind. Let’s take good care of each other.
I would love to hear what this Psalm brings to mind for you! Write back to me in Facebook comment or blog reply.
