God Is Not Your Average King

To the chief Musician on Neginoth, A Psalm of David.
Give ear to my words, O LORD,
Consider my meditation.
Hearken unto the voice of my cry, my King, and my God:
For unto thee will I pray.
My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O LORD;
In the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.
For thou art not a God that hath pleasure in wickedness:
Neither shall evil dwell with thee.
The foolish shall not stand in thy sight:
Thou hatest all workers of iniquity.
Thou shalt destroy them that speak leasing:
The LORD will abhor the bloody and deceitful man.
But as for me, I will come into thy house in the multitude of thy mercy:
And in thy fear will I worship toward thy holy temple.
Lead me, O LORD, in thy righteousness because of mine enemies;
Make thy way straight before my face.
For there is no faithfulness in their mouth;
Their inward part is very wickedness;
Their throat is an open sepulchre;
They flatter with their tongue.
Destroy thou them, O God;
let them fall by their own counsels;
Cast them out in the multitude of their transgressions; for they have rebelled against thee.
But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice:
Let them ever shout for joy, because thou defendest them: let them also that love thy name be joyful in thee.
For thou, LORD, wilt bless the righteous;
With favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield.
God Is Not Your Average King
In this chapter, King David describes God in the traits of an earthly king. When he cries out to the Lord, he calls him “my King and my God (Psalm 5:2)”. He pleads to God, asking Him to address his problems like a king would respond to his enemies. David trusts the Lord because he knows that just as a king is in full control over who can stand before his throne, David says God will not allow the foolish to stand before him (5:5). David is surrounded by devious flatterers and rebellious enemies (5:9-10) whom he cannot trust. David implores God to destroy them and cast them out, knowing that God will protect him. Finally, King David believes that God will show favor and bless the righteous, like a king would place his shield (5:12) of approval on those he feels are supportive of him.
When I pray to God, just as David did, I want to acknowledge that He is a God of love, grace, and mercy. Sometimes my cries come from a place of frustration, hurt or anger. But God helps me to see through His word and the actions of Jesus how He would respond to every situation. Sometimes I am surprised by the gentle and merciful ways of Christ, such as His example of “turning the other cheek. (Matthew 5:39)” and the time when the disciples asked Him to rain down fire on their enemies, but he rebuked them and followed God’s way (Luke 9:54). God’s attributes are Divine and Holy, and His thoughts are much higher than my thoughts. I ultimately want to pray that His will be done, not mine. How can I align my will with God’s will?
