Therefore, in 2024, I resolve to say these five words more often who, what, when, where, and why.

Like most people, I loved those blockbuster thriller movies like iRobot and The Terminator which pit the human race against total annihilation by Artificial Intelligence. You know the plot. Some expert scientist in a secret government agency or a prodigy kid living in the basement of his parent’s home builds a supercomputer. Next, the computer begins to learn on its own and devises a scheme to destroy the human race. The battle of the brains. Human versus AI ensues and in the end, we all know who is going to win. Of course, humans somehow figure out a way to dismantle AI and save the day from the technological apocalypse.

In 2023, I began to hear dire predictions of the potential for AI to actually destroy mankind. Geoffrey Hinton, the alleged godfather of AI publicly stated on national news that the technology he created has gotten out of hand. AI can potentially rise above our control. Further reports warned about the pervasive and destructive impact of AI. Therefore, in 2024, I resolve to say these five words more often who, what, when, where, and why.

Do not accept anything at face value because it could be AI trying to trick you.

Who are you?

Do not accept anything at face value because it could be AI trying to trick you. AI could be a fake photo or image that causes you to believe something is real that isn’t real. Even The Pope himself was a victim of the deceptive practices of AI. Also, vulnerable people have given up their life savings having been tricked by computerized scanned phone calls from AI pretending to be a loved one in distress.

To be less vulnerable to these voice and image delusions, for added security, one way to fight back is to set up a special password between you, your friends, and family for identity verification. If the other party does not know the special password, you know they aren’t legit.

What is really real?

When you interact with information sources, like reading a book or hearing a song, how do you know if it is truly created by humans or did robots assist in the creation of the product? In the battle between AI and man, computers have the advantage of being capable of analyzing and manipulating millions of data algorithms. They can “create” novels, and television scripts. They can even record “genuine” music using words and works prior created by humans. Often, human contributions to the final products are not paid for or acknowledged. This is one of the main issues that led to the actor’s and writers strikes

Congress and the Supreme Court may need to get involved in regulating this growing battle for personal ownership of human creations. Regulations, laws, and policies can protect human thought, and creations remain honored. Our input is given the value and dignity it is worth.

AI With wings

Because technology is changing our lives so fast, we must slow things down and take time to deeply analyze the important ways this technology is altering mankind’s existence and behavior.

When did we go back to the future?

The world has gone from massive computers which were mainly used by the business industrial complex to small handheld communications devices commonly used by individuals around the world. Computers are now mechanizing work in a variety of fields. For instance, drones are delivering mail, and even in hospitals, some machines are delivering medication to patients. On some college campuses, robots are bringing snacks ordered to dorm rooms.

Computers have changed the way we work, socially communicate, and play. Because technology is changing our lives so fast, we must slow things down and take time to deeply analyze the important ways this technology is altering mankind’s existence and behavior. AI technology has traveled through time at the speed of light and left us with bewildering questions to resolve. Questions about when these new technologies will become available, who has access to them, and who will benefit from them. These questions will further our need to think about issues of diversity, equality, and inclusion (DEI).

Use critical thinking techniques to analyze observe, and measure what is true or not. Remember, seeing isn’t necessarily believing.

Where is Everywhere?

AI technology is practically everywhere we look. It pervades education, entertainment, politics, social media, science, medicine, and communications. Everyone is using AI in one way or another. In education, some students, faculty, and researchers are using AI to cheat, plagiarize, and falsify their research findings. Leaving us to question the validity of their professional work. Scamming AI robots can victimize by sending sophisticated cellular texts, writing cleverly worded emails, and creating convincing images that are false appearing real. Don’t just accept information at face value. Use critical thinking techniques to analyze observe, and measure what is true or not. Remember, seeing isn’t necessarily believing.

Why are we afraid?

Why are we now in a battle with AI? This technology was created to positively enhance human innovations, research, and social interactions. And it has done its part. A tremendous amount of good has come from AI. Unlike humans, the computer is not biased. Unlike human workers, AI does not get tired, demand higher pay, or call in sick. Where did things go wrong? Somewhere in this process, the computer’s abilities to analyze and manipulate data have gone far beyond our human comprehension and power to control. This has left us feeling afraid, paranoid, and vulnerable. Like Frankenstein, we’ve lost control of the monster we created.

Ultimately, we have the power to decide in what ways we will use this awesome technology. Our moral and ethical perspectives should be the driving force in determining the ways mankind will be impacted by AI. We must look at ourselves, the creators and users, and demand from the leaders in this field accountability for the protection of human rights. This is the only way we will win the battle and save the human race from total AI apocalyptic annihilation. This way, we will win the battle for generations to come.
