Psalm 1:1-6 (KJV)

“Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners,

Nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.

But his delight is in the law of the LORD ;

And in his law doth he meditate day and night.

And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water,

That bringeth forth his fruit in his season;

His leaf also shall not wither;

And whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

The ungodly are not so:

But are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.

Therefore, the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment,

Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.

For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous:

But the way of the ungodly shall perish.”

Influence for Affluence – Psalm 1

When I read this passage, what came to mind was what I experienced when I was pursuing my bachelor’s degree. I took a research class focusing on “groupthink.” These studies analyze how and why individuals are influenced by others in a group. I remembered when I wanted to be accepted by my peers in high school. I remember the times in the workplace when working on a team project, I agreed to some proposals because I did not want to be the one dissenting voice. Usually, positive outcomes occurred when I joined with others to volunteer on a community project or to perform in a choir or musical. Psalms chapter one compares predictable outcomes when one makes the choice to follow one type of group versus another. As they say, “birds of a feather flock together.”

I believe when two or three are gathered together to praise, worship, pray and honor God, then His presence is with them. I delight in being in His presence and love His word. There is so much joy in fellowshipping with others who feel the same. Sounds like heaven, doesn’t it?

I feel like this passage is reminding me to gather with good people to do good things. I will continue to meditate on this psalm to remind me how important it is to do so.

I would love to hear what this Psalm brings to mind for you! Write back to me on Facebook comment or blog reply.
