Psalm 9:1-20 (KJV)

To the chief Musician upon Muth-labben, A Psalm of David

א Aleph

I will praise thee, O LORD , with my whole heart;

I will shew forth all thy marvellous works.

I will be glad and rejoice in thee:

I will sing praise to thy name, O thou Most High.

ב Bet

When mine enemies are turned back,

They shall fall and perish at thy presence.

For thou hast maintained my right and my cause;

Thou satest in the throne judging right.

ג Gimel

Thou hast rebuked the heathen, thou hast destroyed the wicked,

Thou hast put out their name for ever and ever.

O thou enemy, destructions are come to a perpetual end:

And thou hast destroyed cities; Their memorial is perished with them.

ה He

But the LORD shall endure for ever:

He hath prepared his throne for judgment.

And he shall judge the world in righteousness,

He shall minister judgment to the people in uprightness.

ו Waw

The LORD also will be a refuge for the oppressed,

A refuge in times of trouble.

And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee:

For thou, LORD, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.

ז Zain

Sing praises to the LORD, which dwelleth in Zion:

Declare among the people his doings.

When he maketh inquisition for blood, he remembereth them:

He forgetteth not the cry of the humble.

ח Het

Have mercy upon me, O LORD; Consider my trouble which I suffer of them that hate me,

Thou that liftest me up from the gates of death:

That I may shew forth all thy praise in the gates of the daughter of Zion:

I will rejoice in thy salvation.

ט Tet

The heathen are sunk down in the pit that they made:

In the net which they hid is their own foot taken.

The LORD is known by the judgment which he executeth:

The wicked is snared in the work of his own hands.

Higgaion. Selah.

י Yod

The wicked shall be turned into hell,

And all the nations that forget God.

כ Kaph

For the needy shall not alway be forgotten:

The expectation of the poor shall not perish for ever.

Arise, O LORD ; let not man prevail:

Let the heathen be judged in thy sight.

Put them in fear, O LORD:

That the nations may know themselves to be but men.

Selah.

Kingdoms Rise and Fall

Chapter nine is a defiant shout of David in the face of heathen nations. Just as he did to Goliath, he boldly declares the marvelous works of God. With his whole heart, he sings praises and sees his enemies turned back and destroyed. He warns his enemies that the Lord shall judge the world, and their stain of devastation will come to an end. Their wicked deeds are not everlasting. They will be caught in their own snares. “The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God”(9:17). The nations will know they are but men, not God. Man is temporal, not eternal.

Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied. This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD’s, and he will give you into our hands.

1 Samuel 17:45-47 (KJV)

A Christian life is described as a spiritual warfare. Sometimes, when I am in the midst of this battle, being bombarded on all sides by enemies, it feels like the battle will never end. But in chapter nine, David reminds me to rejoice in my salvation. He rebukes the enemy and has faith that God will give him mercy. God has proven this to be true for me, and through it all, I have learned I can depend on him.

No weapon formed against me shall prosper. (Isaiah 54:17 KJV)
