Ophthalmologist Revoluzionizes Cataract Surgery
When I worked at Richmond Eye and Ear Hospital, I had the rare experience, as a lay person, to witness the magic of LASIK eye surgery. I held my breath as I watched the bright red laser direct its beam with perfect accuracy to correct visual acuity. I released a slow, grateful sigh of relief when the surgery was over and the patient looked around with sight restored and pointed around the room at all the things they could now see clearly: The hands of the clock on the wall, the exit sign, letters on a page. I am humbled to be a witness to how this type of surgery has advanced over the last decade to become almost commonplace through the invention and development of laser technology. A similar evolution occurred with cataract surgery.
Today, over 4 million cataract surgeries are performed around the world daily. The invention of laser technology has served to make cataract surgery more accurate, efficient and accessible. Dr. Patricia Bath (1942-2019) was an Ophthalmologist who was an early pioneer in the field of laser eye procedures. Bath was a trailblazer, as the first African American doctor to receive a patent in the medical field for laserphaco. As the founder of the American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness, she was also considered to be a humanitarian, and later created what is known as community Ophthalmology. This practice is the intermingling of public and community health practices to prevent blindness.
