World Poetry Day – Elizabeth Barret Browning

I distinctly recall the day in middle school when I first became a hopeless romantic. It was the day I was first introduced to the famous sonnet, How Do I Love Thee? Let Me Count the Ways by Elizabeth Barret Browning. My young heart fluttered as I tingled with delight at every rhythmic sound she chose to so carefully tell her lover how she felt.

This type of verbal connection from one person to another had begun a longing in my spirit to be able to free my own words, eloquently bare my thoughts and feelings, and elicit emotions within others just like she planted in me.

Elizabeth Barret Browning is my favorite poet. If you would like to learn more about her, I suggest you read her book, Sonnets of the Portuguese. In this book, there are many other sonnets that will capture the essence of the love story between her, and her famous poet husband, Robert Browning. You will also learn more about the interesting way they met; first through written correspondence, then through personal visits in her home, where she was described as “somewhat of an invalid.” With many difficulties to her health, yet she and Robert Browning fell in love. Then, she went on to write both marvelous and intimate work, supporting and encouraging each other in their life’s time together.

I do not consider myself a poet; but I hear poetry in the songs I write, and in the carefully chosen words of my blog and my recent book, Today and Forever: A Narrative Coloring Book. I even wrote a spoken-word piece called “Domination” where I combined words and visual effects in a message against violence.

I hope you all enjoy all the poets that bring beautiful sounds into your heart and mind at every age. I would love to hear about the poets you love, or you can share what you have written in your own words.
