Psalm 33:1-22 (KJV)

[1] Rejoice in the LORD, O ye righteous:

For praise is comely for the upright.

[2] Praise the LORD with harp:

Sing unto him with the psaltery and an instrument of ten strings.

[3] Sing unto him a new song;

Play skilfully with a loud noise.

[4] For the word of the LORD is right;

And all his works are done in truth.

[5] He loveth righteousness and judgment:

The earth is full of the goodness of the LORD .

[6] By the word of the LORD were the heavens made;

And all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.

[7] He gathereth the waters of the sea together as an heap:

He layeth up the depth in storehouses.

[8] Let all the earth fear the LORD :

Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him.

[9] For he spake, and it was done ;

He commanded, and it stood fast.

[10] The LORD bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought:

He maketh the devices of the people of none effect.

[11] The counsel of the LORD standeth for ever,

The thoughts of his heart to all generations.

[12] Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD ;

And the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance.

[13] The LORD looketh from heaven; he beholdeth all the sons of men.

[14] From the place of his habitation he looketh upon all the inhabitants of the earth.

[15] He fashioneth their hearts alike;

He considereth all their works.

[16] There is no king saved by the multitude of an host:

A mighty man is not delivered by much strength.

[17] An horse is a vain thing for safety:

Neither shall he deliver any by his great strength.

[18] Behold, the eye of the LORD is upon them that fear him,

Upon them that hope in his mercy;

[19] To deliver their soul from death,

And to keep them alive in famine.

[20] Our soul waiteth for the LORD :

He is our help and our shield.

[21] For our heart shall rejoice in him,

Because we have trusted in his holy name.

[22] Let thy mercy, O LORD , be upon us,

According as we hope in thee.

United Praise

Psalms 33 is a jubilant call for every righteous nation and person to praise the Lord. The praise not only comes from our mouths in songs, but also includes the harmonies from musical instruments. David even explains that even God’s creationsโ€”the earth and seasโ€”are a testament of God’s glory and praise. The Psalm begins with the admonishment, โ€œrejoice in the Lord, o ye righteousโ€ (33:1). He adds that this type of rejoicing looks beautiful. โ€œFor praise is comely to the uprightโ€(33:1). The next verse contains an instruction to add a variety of musical instruments to this lovely display of praise to God. He mentions โ€œthe harpโ€ฆthe psaltery and an instrument of ten stringsโ€ (33:2). These righteous will play skillfully with a loud noise and their songs will be continually new (33:3). We rejoice in the Lord because His word is right and true (33:4). He loves righteousness and judges fairly (33:5).

The Earth is full of the goodness of the Lord. He is so worthy of our praise. God spake and the heavens and all its hosts were made (33:6). God first spoke His heavenly kingdom into existence, then turned His power to down to the Earth. He started with bringing the seas to and lands together. As we know from Genesis chapter one, everything was created by God. David again calls for all the earth and its inhabitants to fear the Lord and stand in awe of Him (33:8). We are all united in holy reverence to God. โ€œFor He spake and it was doneโ€ (33:9). God’s counsel is above anything man can try to devise (33:10). His commands stand forever (33:11).

As king of Israel, David declares that blessed is the nation and people who have been chosen by the Lord (33:12). God even looks from heaven at each individual, He knows their hearts and their deeds (33:13). David explains that there is no king or person that is saved by any strength greater than God (33:16). Not even that of a horse (33:17)! โ€œOur soul waiteth on the Lord, He is our helpโ€ (33:20). David ends with the request that because of our trust is in the Lord, l and our praise, let his mercy be upon us (33:22).

God inhabits the praises of his people. When I am singing, rejoicing, praising and worshiping, especially in a church setting, united with other believers, my heart is filled with so much joy. Gathering with the saints, hearing the beautiful voices, the musicians playing, and the clapping and shouting is a communal level of praise that is different from the time when I am alone. God says where two or three are gathered together in my name there I am also (Matthew 18:20). I imagine that this wonderful feeling of awe of God will be multiplied greatly in heaven. Until then, I wonโ€™t forsake this time on Earth that God has given us to bless each other as we bless His holy name.
