It’s women’s history month. As you celebrate women internationally and across the United States who have made significant contributions to the world in so many areas of science, education, and so much more, remember. There are women right now making history right now in your life. You, right now, are making the history of your life.
Elizabeth Barret Browning is my favorite poet. If you would like to learn more about her, I suggest you read her book, Sonnets of the Portuguese. In this book, there are many other sonnets that will capture the essence of the love story between her, and her famous poet husband, Robert Browning. You will also learn more about the interesting way they met; first through written correspondence, then through personal visits in her home, where she was described as “somewhat of an invalid.” With many difficulties to her health, yet she and Robert Browning fell in love. Then she went on to write both marvelous and intimate work, supporting and encouraging each other in their life’s time together.
What are YOU Reading? Join ACBVA on February 27th at 7:00 pm to hear and share your love of books. I am a voracious reader! You will find me with my earplugs in every day, listening to one of my favorite audible books. And, like other book lovers, I can’t wait to share the latest…

Today, February 28th, marks Rare Eye Disease Day. It is a chance to bring awareness to the variety of conditions that can and do impact people’s sight. However, it’s not so rare to have problems with your eyes. Tomorrow begins Save Your Vision Month. So many of us are going to experience age-related conditions like cataracts and macular degeneration. Start now, especially if you are young, to love your eyes, take care of them, and pay attention to visual indicators of something that might be going awry. You may be able to prevent eye problems in the future.
It was such a pleasure engaging in an international collaboration with illustrator Jenna Holton— who lives in Finland—on my book Today and Forever: A Narrative Coloring Book.
March 15th is National Shoe the World Day, and we have someone locally who is doing just that: one family at a time.
Denise Biggs, founder of Katie’s Soles, has made it her mission to ensure that no man, woman, or child goes without a pair of shoes. For several years, she has been diligently collecting donations of gently used and new shoes and delivering them for free to those in Central Virginia.
In 2019, I founded the Graduate Shine Award, a private scholarship for graduating seniors. This scholarship acknowledges the winner’s enormous efforts in the face of adversity. The recipient receives a certificate and a $500.00 award.
’m thinking about how important a role the Black church has been in black history in America. How it has been a source of encouragement, empowerment, solace, refuge, and strength since Africans came to its shores.
