Peacemakers: 3 Strategies to Follow
Few American historic icons symbolize peace like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He is internationally remembered and honored for his non-violent protest methods. Thousands of others, from all walks of life, joined hearts and hands with him in peaceful advocacy for civil rights for all. I am thankful to King and so many others for their selfless and courageous acts which led to many of the rights and freedoms I enjoy today. Their efforts reveal three ways we all can strive to be peacemakers.
Strategy 1: Bring Calm to Chaos
In one well-known biblical passage, Jesus spoke to the winds and the waves of a tumultuous storm and said, “Peace be still” (Mark 4:39 KJV). Peacemakers have a way of bringing calm and comfort in times of emergency, anxiety, and uncertainty. They maintain emotional control and use their knowledge, skills, and ingenuity to help solve problems. Many, like me, are grateful to these people who can be relied upon as leaders with compassion and action.
Strategy 2: Bring Conclusion to Conflict
One definition for the word peace is no war or an end to war. War ends when the violent actions between the participants are quelled. Peacemakers work tirelessly to bring warring individuals, groups, and even nations to agree to a cease-fire. It is only when this designated time occurs that negotiations for peace treaties can commence. This process is not easy and usually involves a number of failed attempts before the combatants reach a successful peace agreement. I admire the patient, resourceful, and skilled peacemakers who have made this arduous process their life’s work.
Strategy 3: Bring Dreams to Darkness
In King’s famous I Have A Dream speech, he saw beyond the segregated, unjust, political systems and dreamt of a world where all men would truly be treated equally. Peacemakers see the potential for change and optimistically work to make it happen. Peacemakers can communicate their visions to others in a variety of ways such as literary works, visual arts, and musical performances. In the darkness that shrouds our current world, we are blessed to have these beacons of dreams to brighten our future paths.
Peacemakers are blessed (Matthew 5:9 KJV). I pray the legacy of MLK continues on and on. It will, as long as we strive to incorporate these three peacemaker strategies into our daily lives.
