Psalm 14:1-7 KJV

To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David

The fool hath said in his heart, there is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, There is none that doeth good. The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, To see if there were any that did understand, And seek God. They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: There is none that doeth good, no, not one. Have all the workers of iniquity no knowledge? Who eat up my people as they eat bread, and call not upon the LORD . There were they in great fear: For God is in the generation of the righteous. Ye have shamed the counsel of the poor, Because the LORD is his refuge. Oh that the salvation of Israel were come out of Zion! When the LORD bringeth back the captivity of his people, Jacob shall rejoice, and Israel shall be glad.

Give Me A Clean Heart

David has never wavered in his strong conviction that the character of the wicked and that of the righteous are polar opposites. In Psalm 14, he is uncompromising in his harsh and direct words, calling all who have said in their heart, “there is no God, is a fool.” Lumping these types of people together, David uses the plural pronoun “they”; and they are all corrupt and they are none that doeth good. No, not one. God is described here as looking down to the Earth to see if he could find anyone righteous.

Scripture tells us God did the same in Noah‘s time and in the days of Lot. Regrettably, few faithful men could be found. David sadly reports that God saw that they were all filthy “’And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. (Genesis 6:5)” At the other end of the compass, the righteous maintain their belief in God, and He in turn watches over them to keep them from evil. “God is in the generations of the righteous. The lord is a refuge to the poor.” David announces that the people of Israel will rejoice when God delivers them from captivity, or the hands of the wicked, and then all will know that there is a God, and He is the God of their salvation.

One of the most ominous passages of scripture for me is Jesus’s description of the world in the last days. His prophecy of the future reminds me of being surrounded by people who have completely rebelled against the knowledge of God. Jesus said, “As it was in the days of Noah, so it shall be in the latter days.” David focused on the hearts of men and God does as well. I pray that God will cleanse my heart. I know that all of my righteousness “is as filthy rags.” [Paul] I know that it is only through the righteousness of Christ that I can stand before God cleansed from sin.
