God’s Timing
Psalm 70 (KJV)
1 Make haste, o God, to deliver me; make haste to help me, O Lord.
2 Let them be ashamed and confounded that seek after my soul: let them be turned backward, and put to confusion, that desire my hurt.
3 Let them be turned back for a reward of their shame that say, Aha, aha.
4 Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: and let such as love thy salvation say continually, Let God be magnified.
5 But I am poor and needy: make haste unto me, O God: thou art my help and my deliverer; O Lord, make no tarrying.
God’s Timing
In Psalm 70, there is no doubt that David is faced with an emergency situation and all he can do is urgently cry out to God to save him now. And he means right now. At least four times, David pleads for God to rescue him speedily or with great haste. Most of us can relate to this desperate call to God for deliverance, for we know He alone can save us. David cries, “Make haste, O God, to deliver me; Make haste to help me, O Lord” (70:1). This double request for immediate assistance makes one imagine David is feeling helpless, trapped and in trouble. He clearly wants God to know his dire need of assistance. David turns his thoughts towards his enemies. “Let them be ashamed and confounded which seek after my soul” (70:2). He asks God to let them be turned backward in confusion. God will intercede quickly for David against those who laugh and torment him saying, “Aha, aha” (70:3). But in contrast to the wicked, David says “let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee” (70:4). Those that love God and His salvation will say continually, let God be magnified. David returns to his own plight, saying “but I am poor and needy” (70:5) and he asks God again for His swift intervention. God is his help and deliverer. Once more, he prays God will not tarry.
Who will you call when you find yourself in desperate need of help? Will your first thought be to call 911, or your mother or spouse? In this psalm, David wants us to remember that God is our primary deliverer. We can cry out to Him and ask for His immediate help. God never sleeps or slumbers, he is always aware of our situation. “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much” (James 5:16). God, help me to be like David and to wholeheartedly cry out to you when I am in need. I know that you are my very present help in times of trouble (Psalm 46:1).
