To the chief Musician upon Sheminith, A Psalm of David
Help, LORD; for the godly man ceaseth;
For the faithful fail from among the children of men.
They speak vanity every one with his neighbour:
With flattering lips and with a double heart do they speak.
The LORD shall cut off all flattering lips,
And the tongue that speaketh proud things:
Who have said, With our tongue will we prevail;
Our lips are our own: who is lord over us?
For the oppression of the poor,
For the sighing of the needy,
Now will I arise, saith the LORD ;
I will set him in safety from him that puffeth at him.
The words of the LORD are pure words:
As silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.
Thou shalt keep them, O LORD,
Thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever.
The wicked walk on every side,
When the vilest men are exalted.

David so often speaks of the wicked man, that he caught me by surprise in Psalm 12, when his focus is on the faithful. Well, I should say, he now rebukes those who appear to be faithful, but in truth, they have fallen away from God. David cries out to God for help because the faithful man ceaseth (12:1). The formerly righteous person now speaks with a double heart (12:2). His tongue is filled with flattering words, but his intent is ill will towards the poor and needy (12:5-6). In David’s eyes, this once-righteous man is no better than the wicked man.
The betrayal of a friend or someone you love cuts deep into your trusting heart like a knife. Deceit, falsehood and lies—once revealed—show the true, malicious character of the person you thought was honest, caring and faithful. Judas Iscariot, one of Jesus’s chosen apostles and close friends, is the primary example of this sort of betrayal. Like David, I cry out to God to help me with those around me who use their tongue to cause harm. I seek refuge with the Lord, because “The words of the Lord are pure words” (12:6).
