I want to introduce you once again to my sister-in-law, China Archer. You may remember she was one of the fabulous voices on my gospel hit Tell Me Your Testimony.

For National Crafting Month, she shares her passion for her gift of crafting and sharing her blessing of sewing with others.

China Archer: Sharing Love Through Sewing

D: So how did you come to learn to sew? And how did your love for this craft develop over time?

C: I started sewing when I was 13 years old. The reason I started to sew: I was raised in the Pentecostal faith, and I was not allowed to wear pants. I sang in a praise group that was going to Hersheypark, Pennsylvania, and I wanted to wear a pair of pants.  My mother told me that if I wanted to wear pants, she was not going to buy them. With her help, I instead constructed my first garment, which was the pants along with a line vest.  As I began to sew, I started to make my own clothes for school.  I have also sewn for other individuals.

D: Do you still have your first sewing machine, or at least recall what model it was? Is it an antique now?

C: The first sewing machine that I owned was a Singer Futura II. I could sew every type of fabric on that machine. If I had kept that sewing machine, it would be considered an antique today. However, I met a young lady who needed a better sewing machine for her business, and I gave my machine to her.  My mother purchased a new Elna top-of-the-line sewing machine, and I started to use her Elna sewing machine.

D: I knew your mother, and it is a delight to hear that she was so involved in your love of sewing.

C: Yes, she was, Debra, and I still have her sewing machine today.

D: Did you ever think about using your sewing skills in a professional career?

C: I have never thought about sewing professionally as a career.  When I was younger, I wanted to attend Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and audit a class on pattern construction, but I never did it.

D: What types of crafts, items, etc., do you make?

C: I’ve constructed bridal dresses, coats, and apparel-to-wear, including dresses, blouses, skirts, and pants.  At present, I am making baby blankets, burping clothes, and swaddle blankets for upcoming mothers-to-be.

D: You began by learning from your mother, and I know you have children. Have you passed this crafting art along to your children?

C: I have a daughter who graduated from VCU School of Fashion Design.  I believe that sewing is also in her blood, but her interest is in crocheting and knitting garments and items. She also sews when it is needed.

D: Yes! I am so excited to have the pleasure of interviewing both you and your daughter for your talents in crafting skills this month!

I had to reflect on some of the work I know you’ve done. You did a beautiful job of sewing skirts for my praise/dance team at my church. We were so thrilled with the lovely flowing purple skirts that moved elegantly from side to side as we danced. Have you created or designed any other specific projects for individuals or groups?

C: I have worked on several projects over the years, but right now, I am running a personal business making baby items!

D: That’s wonderful! You mentioned I also remember being delighted to see the fabulous gift basket you created with hand-sewn monogrammed towels. Was learning to embroider a difficult process?

C: I have purchased two sewing machines that do embroidery.  I recently enrolled in a class for both machines. The classes were very informative regarding the details of learning information on both machines.

D: I know that you are a woman of faith. How is sewing spiritually inspirational for you?

C: When I give someone something I have sewn, I feel that I have been a blessing to someone. It rewards me to give and to show the love of Jesus Christ.

D: How has sewing changed over the years? Have there been new developments that you like or dislike?

C: I have perfected my skills in sewing during my years of sewing, for my items to look professionally made.  I have no issues when it comes to sewing.  This is a passion that I love.  But the environment, when it comes to sewing has definitely changed.  I remember when paying the price for a pattern would only cost a $1.75 and now you find them for the cost of $15 and above.  At one time, the cost of fabric was starting at $1.99 a yard.  Today, the same fabric would probably cost you $12 and above.  I remember Fabric Warehouse and Piece Goods Shop were fantastic places to go for reasonable prices and to find everything you needed for your sewing projects.  Today, I still have fabrics that I brought from those stores.  The best type of fabric quality ever.  When buying fabric today, the quality of fabric is not the same.

D: What are your future plans in utilizing your sewing skills?

C: I’m excited to share that I will soon be teaching sewing classes at my church! I’m really excited about it. My passion for sewing is so great, and I just want to pass on what I have taught myself and learned. I hope that people will use this as a tool to become a fashion designer or, seamstress or go to school for a related degree. I am overwhelmed by it, truly.

D: I am very proud of your achievement and know that it is going to be successful! How can people find you and your work?

C: If you need a baby shower gift basket or embroidered baby items, you can reach out to me by email: createdsfy@gmail.com. I would be happy to send you pictures.
