Psalms in Your Palm

Psalm 13:1-6 (KJV)

To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.

1How long wilt thou forget me, O LORD? for ever?

How long wilt thou hide thy face from me?

2How long shall I take counsel in my soul, Having sorrow in my heart daily?

How long shall mine enemy be exalted over me?

3Consider and hear me, O LORD my God:

Lighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death;

4Lest mine enemy say, I have prevailed against him;

And those that trouble me rejoice when I am moved.

5But I have trusted in thy mercy;

My heart shall rejoice in thy salvation.

6I will sing unto the LORD, because he hath dealt bountifully with me.

Trouble Don’t Last

Throughout the book of Psalms, David reveals the intimate nature of his relationship with God in his open and honest words to the Lord. In Psalm 13, one could say he is expressing impatience with God because of the agonizing length of time he has suffered at the hands of his enemies. Four times, he asks, “how long will [his] troubles last?” To David, it seemed as if his trials would last “forever.” He felt God had forgotten him and had hidden his face. David fully expresses his heart’s sorrow, and David, again, questions why God is delaying his deliverance. “How long will my enemies triumph over me?” But in the end, David resolves to trust in God’s mercy and salvation (13:5). He ends by professing he will sing (13:6), as he recalls the bountiful blessings he has received from the Lord.

One of the purposes of journaling is to chronicle your life experiences so you can reflect and relive an accurate account of what happened during that time. I wish I had done more journaling because my life has been a testimony of the bountiful blessings of God. He has proven His abundant love for me through critical times that I thought would last forever. But, as the song says, “trouble don’t last always.” Jesus heals, the Spirit brings peace, and God turns sorrow into joy. Like David, so many of the songs I have written have evolved from a time of pain to the miracle-working power of God. I will sing.
