Happy Celebrate Life Day!
“What do you think about when you wake up each morning?”
I celebrate life each morning in the same way. Before I open my eyes from being asleep, I talk to God. I tell him I believe in miracles, and I tell him anytime he wants me to see, I will see.
Then I open my eyes.
And the world is still dark.
And I say to God, “You didn’t heal me today.”
And He says back to me. “Not yet.”
And I smile. And I sing the song. This is the day that the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it.
In life, I count my blessings and focus on the love within me and around me. This brings me peace, strength, and joy.
When I wrote this story, I saw parts of myself in the main character. I know one day I will see.

The Lucky Penny by Debra Hill
At the age of accountability, she awoke to find a penny in her palm. This must be my lucky day, she thought, smiling at the shiny coin. She put the penny in her pocket and carried it with her from morning to night.
At breakfast, when her mother gave her French toast with butter and maple syrup, she rubbed her lucky penny. When her teacher announced the test was postponed until next week, she sighed with relief and whispered to the penny, “Lucky for me.”
Day after day, she woke up each morning with the penny in the palm of her hand. All through the day, she took note of the many times she felt lucky. Sometimes it was just dumb luck, like when she turned the dial on the gumdrop machine and two of the sweet treats rolled out into her hand instead of one. She couldn’t believe how lucky it was that she had landed the winning score of the game when she made a three-point jump shot.
Each night she fell asleep clutching the penny in her palm. She did not want her luck to run out.
Like clockwork, she awoke each morning to ensure her body would be lucky. Day after day, year after year, luck was still with her.
She grew older and the penny showed signs of aging as well. She noticed its surface as now dull and rusty. She thought, Perhaps my luck is not so fine a lady as she used to be. After all, for years she has tried to win the lottery, and that certainly hasn’t happened yet. And although she is a survivor, there was nothing lucky about breast cancer.
Still, she held on tight to the penny.
Her last day with the penny was just like all the other days that came before. She awoke on her appointed day and was grateful to see the lucky penny in her palm. She carried it lovingly from morning and into night.
She closed her eyes to sleep with the penny in her palm.
Then her luck was gone.
