A Psalm of David
1 LORD , who shall abide in thy tabernacle?
Who shall dwell in thy holy hill?
2 He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart.
3 He that backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbour,
Nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbour.
4 In whose eyes a vile person is contemned;
But he honoureth them that fear the LORD .
He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not.
5 He that putteth not out his money to usury,
Nor taketh reward against the innocent.
He that doeth these things shall never be moved.
The Checklist
David begins Psalms 15 with the rhetorical question, “lord, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? Who shall dwell in thy holy hill?” (15:1) As one might expect, David replies that only an upright, righteous and honest man (15:1) would be worthy of abiding and dwelling in the presence of the Lord. David continues with a checklist of behaviors, outlining actions of do-gooders. Reading these, I began to imagine I had to stand before God to pass inspection. The checklist would begin with how I treat my neighbor (15:3). My life would be analyzed to see if I had ever said unkind words behind someone’s back. (15:3) Have I ever sworn to do something and reneged on the promise? (15:4) Have I used my money fairly? (15:5) David ends by giving assurance to those who can pass the test. He says, “They shall not be moved“ (15:5). At first glance, I felt, “I’m not a bad person, I could meet the stated rules most of the time.” But what would happen when I failed to do so? Would God turn me away?
This sounds tongue-in-cheek, but I don’t believe God is in heaven, like Santa Claus at the North Pole, making a list, checking it twice, gonna find out who’s naughty or nice. I don’t believe David implies this view of God either. Rather, David’s checklist provides examples of how the righteousness of the heart will correspond with righteous actions. The disciples were known as Christians by their love (John 13:35). It is not of works that any man should boast (Ephesians 2:9) because we all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). I thank God that instead of condemnation, he invites us to come boldly to his throne to obtain mercy (Hebrews 4:16). All my righteousness is as filthy rags. But the blood of Jesus alone has washed me whiter than snow (Hebrews 9:14/Psalm 51:7).
I would love to hear what this Psalm brings to mind for you! Write back to me in Facebook comment or blog reply.
