Let It All Out
Psalm 25 is a passionate expression of David’s trust in God while enduring great suffering. He tosses and turns throughout these verses, wailing for God’s forgiveness, mercy and deliverance. He begins with the confident expression that “in God he puts his trust.” (25:2) But in the very next verse, he pleads to the same God to not let it appear that his trust was misguided and he be put to shame (25:2-3). Then, as if lost, David asks God for direction for his plight. “Show me thy way O Lord” (25:4) Continuing to draw closer to God, David asks Him not to remember the transgressions of his youth. He seeks forgiveness for his past sins. Now, he asks to be remembered humbly, not for his own righteousness, but for God’s goodness. “Good and upright is the Lord.”(25:8) David goes on to describe the man, like himself, who will be blessed because he is meek, seeks the Lord and keeps His commandments. This man will come to have an intimate, secret, knowledge of the spiritual things of God. David states that his eyes are ever towards the Lord. (25:15) He knows He will deliver him from the net or the capture of his enemies. David is distressed and afflicted by his many enemies. (25:17-18) David repeats his plea to God to let him not be ashamed. He ends by asking God to not only deliver him personally, but reminding Him that he represents the whole nation of Israel. “Deliver Israel out of its troubles.” (25:22)
In this psalm, as in so many others, David opens up his heart and soul to God with deep and honest expressions of pain and need. As I examine myself and the way I pray to God, I think there are times I hold back my emotions and carefully edit my words. Why do I do this when I know Jesus says I can “cast all my cares on him because he cares for me?” (1 Peter 5:7) Also, so many times before, God has been a very present help in my time of need. I wrote the song, Carefree, because the Word says we can go to that secret place to pray intimately with our Father.(Matthew 6:6) I want to open my heart fully, to bare my soul as David does, and rise up—carefree.
