Is it better to give than to receive? Three reasons why I love giving
The person who extended the gift to me has actually given a gift that keeps on giving or a blessing that keeps on blessing.
Soon we all will celebrate our national day of giving thanks, Thanksgiving. From its origin, Thanksgiving Day serves to remind us to be grateful that we have the necessities for life and can live together in caring, supportive communities.
As we both give and receive during this season, we ponder the question of which is better, to give or to receive? As you may know, the Bible states, that Jesus said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” (Acts 20:35 KJV). Did you notice the verse says, it is more “BLESSED” to give than to receive not better to give than to receive.
An individual gift to me is a blessing that only comes to me alone. I am happy that I received a gift, however, the person who extended the gift to me has actually given a gift that keeps on giving or a blessing that keeps on blessing. How? When I get a gift, I am thankful I received it, but I feel it blessed only me. But, when I am a giver, I enjoy the full process of giving. I enjoy the way it makes me thankful I am able to give, the way it makes me feel when I give, and I try to give something that makes a difference in someone’s life. I try to give a thoughtful, meaningful, and impactful gift. Here are three reasons why I love giving.

It is not the amount of the gift, it is the thought that was put into the selection of the gift that matters.
Giving means you are blessed
I love giving because it means I have something to give that I don’t need to keep for myself. From a materialistic standpoint, I have an abundance of certain things as I look at my closets overflowing with clothes that still have price tags on them and have been hanging there for years. Along with ten pairs of black shoes which all basically look alike, I know that I am blessed. My refrigerator and kitchen cabinets are filled to the brim. I am grateful I can extend my blessings to others.
I also love exchanging gifts with my friends and family because I can carefully think about the person and what I know they love and need. When they open the gift they will be thrilled to have received it. I feel blessed to get a gift from someone who displays that they truly know me. It is not the amount of the gift, it is the thought that was put into the selection of the gift that matters. Someone took the time to bless you and give you something because you are you. It makes giving a more blessed experience. With a loving heart, I happily give to others because I am grateful that I can give at this time in my life. I am blessed.

It is difficult to dwell on my own issues and challenges when I turn my thoughts to the needs of others.
Giving feels good
Some studies have shown that giving makes you feel better and is great for your emotional and mental health. For me, there is something joyful and satisfying about giving. Seeing a smile or hearing heartwarming words of thanks makes me happy that I shared this experience with someone else. It is difficult to dwell on my own issues and challenges when I turn my thoughts to the needs of others. My load is lighter when I share in carrying the load of others. I am reminded that even with the problems I have, someone else could be doing far worse, and wish they were in my shoes. This is why giving feels good.
If you are able to give and have the desire to give then you seek meaningful giving opportunities.
Giving makes a difference
If you are able to give and have the desire to give then you seek meaningful giving opportunities. There are so many avenues for making your giving matter. I love to broaden the impact of my gift, be it monetary or volunteering my time and skills to impact personal, local, national, and worldwide issues. As a blind person, I have become an advocate for accessibility and contribute to organizations like the American Council for the Blind of Virginia, Virginia Voice, and the National Federation of the Blinds of Virginia.
Joining with others to provide resources and information as well as pursue accessible legislative initiatives is an important, life-enhancing activity. As a member of the Board of Directors for the American Council of the Blind of Virginia, I encourage you to support blind and low-vision people and join the community.
Happy Holidays! God Bless You! Thank you to everyone who has read, downloaded, and shared my music, words, and vision! I appreciate you!
