Psalm 20:1-9 KJV

To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.

[1] The LORD hear thee in the day of trouble;

The name of the God of Jacob defend thee;

[2] Send thee help from the sanctuary,

And strengthen thee out of Zion;

[3] Remember all thy offerings,

And accept thy burnt sacrifice;

Selah.

[4] Grant thee according to thine own heart,

And fulfil all thy counsel.

[5] We will rejoice in thy salvation, and in the name of our God we will set up our banners:

The LORD fulfil all thy petitions.

[6] Now know I that the LORD saveth his anointed; He will hear him from his holy heaven

With the saving strength of his right hand.

[7] Some trust in chariots, and some in horses:

But we will remember the name of the LORD our God.

[8] They are brought down and fallen:

But we are risen, and stand upright.

[9] Save, LORD:

Let the king hear us when we call.

Somebody Prayed For Me

In this Psalm, David describes a beautiful and powerful benediction, offering a prayer of God’s protection. In each verse, David’s supporters encourage him to trust in God to save and deliver him. I can imagine King David’s head being anointed with oil as these gracious intercessions are being spoken. They begin with “The Lord hear thee in the day of trouble”(20:1). Notice that these words are not a request but a statement of a truth, a declaration of faith of what will be done. These confident prayers continue that He will “defend thee…send thee help…and strengthen thee(20:1-2). They add assurance that David’s sacrifices will be accepted (20:3). How reassuring this must be to know that the many sacrificial offerings are holy and acceptable unto God and pleases Him.  David is also reminded that God knows his heart and will fulfill its desires through wise counsel (20:4). After sharing these awesome prophesies of God’s protection, the verses change to a celebration, describing how they will rejoice with David when God has fulfilled all his petitions. David responds, “Now I know that the Lord saveth His anointed”(20:6). I imagine David rising up with renewed faith and trust in God to save him and give him victory over his enemies. He is risen and stands upright who trusts in God, not in horses and chariots (20:7). God, the most high king, will hear us when we call (20:9).

Psalm 20 brings to mind those times in my life when I felt overwhelmed with trouble. Feeling weak, anxious, helpless and afraid, I could feel my faith wavering as doubts flooded my heart and mind. In those tough times, I would call on my rolodex of prayer warriors. These precious saints would pray confidently about the faithful, unfailing and victorious God who is our Father, our refuge, our savior and deliverer. They would recite God’s promises from the scriptures and declare the truth of God’s word. Like David, I would rise up with renewed strength and increased faith and trust in God with whom nothing is impossible (Luke 1:37). I thank God for these wonderful intercessors and strive to be an encourager as well. I know the “effectual fervent prayers of a righteous man availeth much” (James 5:16).
