Michtam of David.
1 Preserve me, O God:
For in thee do I put my trust.
2 O my soul , thou hast said unto the LORD ,
Thou art my Lord: My goodness extendeth not to thee;
3 But to the saints that are in the earth,
And to the excellent, in whom is all my delight.
4 Their sorrows shall be multiplied that hasten after another god:
Their drink offerings of blood will I not offer,
Nor take up their names into my lips.
5 The LORD is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup:
Thou maintainest my lot.
6 The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places;
Yea, I have a goodly heritage.
7 I will bless the LORD, who hath given me counsel:
My reins also instruct me in the night seasons.
8 I have set the LORD always before me:
Because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.
9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth:
My flesh also shall rest in hope.
10 For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell;
Neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.
11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life: In thy presence is fulness of joy;
At thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.
Body and Soul
In Psalm 16, David expresses pure delight, contentment and pleasure in the life he lives with God at his right hand. Verse after verse records the blessings of God whom David vows to be the only God he will honor (16:2). His trust and worship is not only displayed in his natural life but also continues through eternity, when his soul will be with God forever (16:11). David paints such a joyful picture as he speaks of how God preserves his life (16:1). David enjoys a life of enchantment with excellent people who delight in the Lord (16:3). While he daily drinks from God’s bountiful cup of blessings, he is also secure that God controls his future, his lot and inheritance (16:5). Through the night seasons, David receives wise counsel and direction from the Lord (16:7). What a life of gladness! But it doesn’t end when David’s mortal life ends. He prophesies that even when his flesh is at rest—which I believe is when he dies—he still has hope that God will resurrect the body and deliver it from the entrapment of hell(16:9-10). Praise the Lord, we know this is true by the glorious resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
The first and greatest commandment is to “love the lord thy God will all thy heart, soul, mind and strength (Luke 10:27)”. In these Psalms, David is an exceptional example of a man who lives with a heart of love towards God. His passion and joy are truly admirable. The daily grind can distract and grab all our attention. In spite of this, I strive to set my affections on things above, more than on all the pleasures and challenges of life (Col. 3:2). I want nothing to satisfy me more than my relationship with Jesus. God says he is a jealous God (Ex. 20:5) and commands that we serve no other God above him (Ex. 34:14). I know that God will keep me in perfect peace if I keep my mind on Him. I also live with the blessed assurance that this peace and joy will continue through eternity when my soul is forever with the lord. Amen.
