Psalm 11:1-7 (KJV)

To the Chief Musician, A Psalm of David.

In the LORD put I my trust:

How say ye to my soul, flee as a bird to your mountain?

For, lo, the wicked bend their bow, they make ready their arrow upon the string,

That they may privily shoot at the upright in heart.

If the foundations be destroyed,

What can the righteous do?

The LORD is in his holy temple,

The LORD ‘s throne is in heaven:

His eyes behold, his eyelids try, the children of men.

The LORD trieth the righteous:

But the wicked and him that loveth violence his soul hateth.

Upon the wicked he shall rain snares, fire and brimstone, and an horrible tempest:

This shall be the portion of their cup.

For the righteous LORD loveth righteousness;

His countenance doth behold the upright.

How Firm a Foundation by Reawaken Hymns

A Firm Foundation

David begins this Psalm with a strong declaration of faith. “In the Lord put I my trust” (11:1). Like a poet, David uses the metaphor of a bird with nowhere to land, flying helplessly in the sky. He compares this to the righteous, who have no foundation. Like the bird, the righteous man is a vulnerable target for the wicked who would aim his bow and arrow to do him great harm. “If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteousness do?” As David so often does, he answers this question with an unwavering assurance that God is in His holy temple, and He is watching over the righteous. He speaks assuredly through the next verses of a God who is righteousness and loves the righteous and hates wickedness. Without a doubt, David states his trust in a God who is faithful and just.

There have been times in my life when my faith has wavered. I want to stand firm on my trust in God, but sometimes when I have been tested by struggles and troubles of this world, I have found myself anxious, afraid and feeling hopeless. My faith is restored when, like David, I remind myself that I will put my trust in the Lord. I know that His word sets a firm foundation for me to land on solid, safe and steady ground. I search the scriptures for His precious promises of love, healing and deliverance.
