Psalm 23:1-6 KJV

A psalm of David.

[1] The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

[2] He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:

He leadeth me beside the still waters.

[3] He restoreth my soul:

He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

[4] Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil:

for thou art with me; Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

[5] Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies:

Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

[6] Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life:

And I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

The Good Shepherd

Psalm 23 may be the most well-known and most frequently quoted of all the psalms. It is so loved for David’s depiction of the Lord as his shepherd, watching over him with tender, loving care (23:1). Each verse reveals a pastural scene of sheep being protected from harm, fed and nurtured and guided by a shepherd’s rod and staff (23:4). This psalm shows the mindset of sheep who are at peace, knowing they have nothing to fear (23:4). David, having been a shepherd himself, writes vividly from both the shepherd’s perspective and that of the lambs. He knows firsthand what a shepherd does for his flock. He expresses the confidence a sheep has in his Lord who provides all he needs (23:1). The shepherd leads the flock to a place of rest and leads them to drink from still waters so their souls are restored (23:2-3). The shepherd guides the sheep through paths of righteousness, helping them not to stumble and fall or go in the wrong direction (23:3). Even during those dark times when the sheep are surrounded by shadows of death, they won’t be afraid because they are comforted by the presence of their Lord (23:4). David reflects on how God exalted and anointed him, even in front of his enemies (23:5). His cup “runneth over (23:5) with blessings. David says he is certain that God’s goodness and mercy will be with him for all his life (23:6). Then, they will continue forever when he dwells with his Lord (23:6).

Psalm 23 provides a beautiful metaphor of Jesus, who is the Good Shepherd, and how He loves, protects and cares for His flock (John 10:14). I feel that this type of love is truly what my heart and soul yearns for. I thank God that He has proven over and over to me that I am His beloved. The scripture says His sheep know His voice (John 10:4). The more I read the Word, spend time in meditation and prayer, and daily consecrate my life to Him, the more familiar and close I am to Him. I pray that I stay close to my Shepherd and not stray far from Him. But it is even more amazing to know that Jesus will always seek to find me and welcome me back to His tender goodness and mercy.
