A Psalm of David.
[1] The earth is the LORD ‘s, and the fulness thereof;
The world, and they that dwell therein.
[2] For he hath founded it upon the seas,
And established it upon the floods.
[3] Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD ?
Or who shall stand in his holy place?
[4] He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart;
Who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully.
[5] He shall receive the blessing from the LORD ,
And righteousness from the God of his salvation.
[6] This is the generation of them that seek him,
That seek thy face, O Jacob.
Selah.
[7] Lift up your heads, O ye gates;
And be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; And the King of glory shall come in.
[8] Who is this King of glory?
The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle.
[9] Lift up your heads, O ye gates; even lift them up, ye everlasting doors;
And the King of glory shall come in.
Who is this King of glory?
The LORD of hosts, he is the King of glory.
Selah.
His Glory Fills The Earth
Psalm 24 begins with the glorious proclamation that God reigns supreme over everything. “The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof.” He is the Founder and Creator of it all. Only the pure of heart and righteous one can commune with God on His holy mountain or in His temple. Handel, the classical composer, put the next verses to triumphant melodies. “Lift up your heads oh ye gates…and the King of Glory shall come in.” One can imagine a huge gathering singing and dancing, welcoming the presence of the Lord among the people who seek Him. In case there is any doubt about whom they sing, they ask the rhetorical question. “Who is the king of glory?”
The answer is truly:
“the Lord of hosts, the Lord mighty in battle.”
I love to listen to Handel’s Messiah during the holiday season. I can hardly wait to hear the triumphant sound of all the instruments combined with all the voices of the choir singing, “lift up your head, oh ye gates.” My heart swells and is filled with joy as I sing along, shouting praises of our God. Surely all the earth itself unites with me in joyful thanks to our Creator.

One of my favorite songs from church is one written directly from this Psalm! My siblings and I adore harmonizing with the lilt of their voices, and the soul-stirring sound of the instruments.
I would love to hear what this Psalm brings to mind for you! Write back to me in Facebook comment or blog reply.
