Psalm 47 (KJV)

1 (To the chief Musician, A Psalm for the sons of Korah.) O clap your hands, all ye people; shout unto God with the voice of triumph.

2 For the LORD most high is terrible; he is a great King over all the earth.

3 He shall subdue the people under us, and the nations under our feet.

4 He shall choose our inheritance for us, the excellency of Jacob whom he loved. Selah.

5 God is gone up with a shout, the LORD with the sound of a trumpet.

6 Sing praises to God, sing praises: sing praises unto our King, sing praises.

7 For God is the King of all the earth: sing ye praises with understanding.

8 God reigneth over the heathen: God sitteth upon the throne of his holiness.

9 The princes of the people are gathered together, even the people of the God of Abraham: for the shields of the earth belong unto God: he is greatly exalted.

Loud Praise

Give the Lord God Almighty exuberant, joyful and loud acclimations of praise. Let all the earth unite in spiritual, physical and emotional gestures to exalt our God. Oh, clap your hands all ye people.

David begins Psalm 47 with a call for everyone to make a joyful noiseโ€”not with singing but with the sharp, rhythmic music of their bodies. He is not only appealing to the nation of Israel, but also, all of God’s human creation. He further commands all to shout to the Lord with the voice of triumph. This is not a quiet, solemn mode of reverence. David is encouraging praise with all your heart, soul and might. God is worthy of this type of praise. He is a great King over all the earth. Now, David speaks boldly about the God of Jacob.

He subdues their enemies; He chooses their inheritance by his faithful promises to give them lands and wealth from conquered enemies. David repeats to shout, sing praises. Sing praises. Sing praises to our King. Sing praises. One can imagine David before the people, shouting, clapping and loudly leading them all in this magnificent gathering before God. For God is the King of all the earth. David explains this type of praise comes from those with understanding. God not only rules over the kings of Israel, but He also has ultimate power over all the kings and princes in every part of this world. He is a sovereign ruler. For the shields of the earth belong to God. He is greatly exalted.

I found great pleasure in David’s song in Psalm 47 because it reminds me of the type of praise I observed as a young girl in my church. After a communal prayer, the praise leader, backed up by the choir, would lead the congregation in songs. Everyone would harmonize together, lifting and clapping hands before the Lord. The hymnals were jubilant and powerful scriptures about our amazing Lord and King. Some people would be so overwhelmed with thanks and gratefulness to God they would cry happy tears or even leap or dance with joy. Inevitably, the songs would shift to a slower pace, shifting from praise to worship. This taught me that God accepts free and open, heartfelt acts of praise. Lord, help me to come before you with all my heart, mind and strength, exalting you, my Lord and King.
