1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
2 Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;
3 Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah.
4 There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High.
5 God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early.
6 The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted.
7 The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.
8 Come, behold the works of the Lord, what desolations he hath made in the earth.
9 He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder; he burneth the chariot in the fire.
10 Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.
11 The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.
Help is Here
In Psalm 46, David confidently sings that he knows he can depend on God to help him in all times of trouble. His God, the God of Jacob, has always proven He is their refuge and strength. All their enemies as well come to know this God who defeats them and brings victory to His chosen people. David asserts God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in times of trouble. Davidโs Lord is personal, up close and near. His presence can be felt. How amazing that the mighty God of the universe cares so deeply for us that He will reveal Himself as only He can in our times of distress. Knowing God is with us, we will not fear anything. David says we can have this courage even if the natural world collapses around us, though the mountains be carried into the sea or the waters shake.
Knowing God is with us, David continues, will bring us peace like a river in the city of God. In Godโs presence, the river flows calmly and gently, bringing life and tranquility. God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved. She can rest knowing God will help her and right away. David faces the rage and roar of the heathen. God shows them His mighty power. He maketh wars to cease. He breaketh the bow and cutteth the spear insunder. The enemy’s weapons are useless against our God. He burneth the chariot in the fire. No weapon of theirs shall prosper. David sings in the voice of the all-powerful God who commands for all to be still and know that I am God. It is like God is saying, โStand awestruck in my presence and see and know who I amโ. I will be exalted among the heathen. I will be exalted in the Earth. David repeats with satisfaction. The Lord of hosts is with us. The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.
There have been a few times in my life when I have had to call 9-1-1. I can still recall the frantic pace of my heart, the fearful thoughts racing through my mind and the shaking of my trembling fingers as I dialed the numbers for help. I also recall the relief I felt as the emergency responders came quickly to my aid. They returned a sense of calm, peace and security to the situation. This is the way David feels about his God, who is a very present help in times of trouble. He reminds me that, first and foremost, I can call on the Lord any time, day or night, and He will always be my refuge and strength. He will calm my fears and trembling heart. Lord, help me to put my faith and trust in you, knowing that I can be still and rely on your power to save me in my times of need.
