Today, on Do Something Nice Day, you might be wondering why you should do something nice. In today’s blog, Debra tells us of three rewards for being nice. And after all, God Don’t Like Ugly.

God Don’t Like Ugly

I learned most of my life lessons from my mother, who I believed had memorized every verse of the Bible. One lesson that I came to know quite well myself is, “God don’t like ugly.” When I forgot to say please or thank you, she pointed her finger with the warning phrase, “God don’t like ugly.” When I did not want to share my toys with my siblings, I would hear her shout from the other room, “Now you know God don’t like ugly.” Or if I just did something mean, like sticking out my tongue at someone I did not like, I would say the words aloud with her, “God don’t like ugly,” and apologize. It was years later when I learned that this phrase wasn’t even in the Bible.

However, the life principle of being nice and kind towards others certainly is.

God is Love and Jesus modeled love in His tender and gentle interactions with others. I believe people are drawn to those who are nice. After all, “You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.” Being nice doesn’t cost much or take a lot of effort. There are three rewards for being nice.

1) Pleasant Social Interaction

Learning social graces, etiquette rules and polite behaviors all combine to create a pleasant and predictable social environment. These niceties help us get along and enjoy the company of family, friends, co-workers and strangers.

2) Consideration of Others

Doing something nice shows you are mindful of the needs and emotions of others. This thoughtful habit is endearing and makes others feel attended to and cared for. Being nice is an unselfish way of looking beyond your own needs in consideration of the life joys and challenges of others.

3) Builds Good Character.

Being a nice person is a good character trait. To conduct oneself in ways that are kindhearted and extending goodwill towards all men is an honorable pursuit.

Continue to be nice to yourself and others.

We need more acts of goodness in our world.
