Blessings Abound
Psalm 67 (KJV)
1 God be merciful unto us, and bless us; and cause his face to shine upon us; Selah.
2 That thy way may be known upon earth, thy saving health among all nations.
3 Let the people praise thee, O God; let all the people praise thee.
4 O let the nations be glad and sing for joy: for thou shalt judge the people righteously, and govern the nations upon earth. Selah.
5 Let the people praise thee, O God; let all the people praise thee.
6 Then shall the earth yield her increase; and God, even our own God, shall bless us.
7 God shall bless us; and all the ends of the earth shall fear him.
Blessings Abound
This psalm continues the theme of universal reverence and praise to God. All peoples along with all nature join together in recognition of God’s bountiful blessings on everything. The first verse uses the pronoun “us,” which lets the listener know that this message is being sent out to everyone—it is all-inclusive. We unite in our prayer to God to bless us and be merciful to us. Moreover, we ask for His face to shine upon us. Like the light of the sun shines on all the peoples of the earth, we ask God to look upon all the nations with His blessed light. Selah.
The psalm continues, “thy way may be known among the earth”. God’s ways are not meant to be exclusively given to the nation of Israel. His ways can be shared, understood and practiced throughout the world, to all nations. The psalmist exclaims twice, “let the people praise thee oh god, let all the people praise thee. oh let the nations be glad and sing for joy”. The knowledge of the Lord and His ways brings shouts of joy and happiness amongst the people. Imagine how wonderful the world would be if all peoples rose up together to salute our awesome God. Imagine a world governed righteously by God. Selah.
He repeats again the call, “let the people praise thee oh god, let the people praise thee”. Nature joins in praise by yielding her increase and God shall bless us. Man and nature yield fruits of praise to God. We are nourished with God’s bountiful harvests and give thanks and praise to God for what He has done.
This psalm is brief but powerful in its message of praise to God for His blessings, mercy and bountiful gifts to all peoples of the earth. Jesus called us to go into all the world to preach the gospel. As saints, our hearts’ desire is to share the loving message of Jesus and salvation to everyone. The vision of universal praise expressed in this psalm is clearly set in my mind as well. God help me to know that I can be a witness to others, bringing them into the knowledge of you and welcoming them to join me and all believers into your kingdom. Our grateful praise for all your blessings can lift you up on this earth now and continue for all eternity in heaven.
