God’s Glory Revealed
Psalm 64 (KJV)
1 Hear my voice, O God, in my prayer: preserve my life from fear of the enemy.
2 Hide me from the secret counsel of the wicked; from the insurrection of the workers of iniquity:
3 Who whet their tongue like a sword, and bend their bows to shoot their arrows, even bitter words:
4 That they may shoot in secret at the perfect: suddenly do they shoot at him, and fear not.
5 They encourage themselves in an evil matter: they commune of laying snares privily; they say, Who shall see them?
6 They search out iniquities; they accomplish a diligent search: both the inward thought of every one of them, and the heart, is deep.
7 But God shall shoot at them with an arrow; suddenly shall they be wounded.
8 So they shall make their own tongue to fall upon themselves: all that see them shall flee away.
9 And all men shall fear, and shall declare the work of God; for they shall wisely consider of his doing.
10 The righteous shall be glad in the Lord, and shall trust in him; and all the upright in heart shall glory.
God’s Glory Revealed
In Psalm 64, even as David is praying to God for protection and deliverance from his deceitful enemies, he emphasizes that the outcome, or the ultimate answer to his prayer will be something more: that all will come to see the mighty and powerful God. David was not solely focused on his deliverance from suffering. His heart’s desire was that his testimony, manifesting God’s triumph over evil, would draw all men to the righteous God.
Once again, we find David’s life is in peril and he is vehemently calling out to God to preserve his life from fear of the enemy. As God has hidden him before, David asks him to hide him again from the secret counsel of the wicked. David gives a thorough description of his tormentors, who conduct their evil deeds in secret. They whet their tongue like a sword and shoot their arrows. One can imagine the harsh and degrading words they used to falsely accuse David. They use bitter words. They shoot at him in secret suddenly. Their attacks are swift, unexpected, meant to catch him off guard. They commune of laying snares privily to entrap him. They are confident as they work in the darkness. They say, who shall see them? Their inward thoughts and heart are deep, filled with evil.
David then rejoices in knowing what God will do. He declares that God will suddenly wound these workers of iniquity with his arrows. “They shall make their own tongue to fall upon themselves”(64:8). David repeatedly warns that the same devices that the wicked try to use to harm him will be turned back against themselves. Here is where David reveals the glorious triumph of God which all shall see. “And all men shall fear, and shall declare the work of God; For they shall wisely consider of his doing. The righteous shall be glad in the LORD, and shall trust in him; And all the upright in heart shall glory.” (64:9-10). What a marvelous outcome as David leads us from his prayer of deliverance to the victorious salvation of his God.
So many times, my prayers to God have focused on the trials and tribulations of life. I cry out to Him for help for so many things which are spiritual attacks on myself or those I love. I know that God hears my voice and he is concerned about all my troubles. However, in Psalm 64, David reminds me that while of course I want blessings from the Lord, ultimately my prayer is that through my suffering and through His miracle-working power that all will see God’s glory, power and might. I pray that my testimony will share what God has done for me. I want the glory, honor and praise to all go to Him. Amen.
