Judge My Heart

A Psalm of David.
[1] Judge me, O LORD; for I have walked in mine integrity:
I have trusted also in the LORD; therefore I shall not slide.
[2] Examine me, O LORD, and prove me;
Try my reins and my heart.
[3] For thy lovingkindness is before mine eyes:
And I have walked in thy truth.
[4] I have not sat with vain persons,
Neither will I go in with dissemblers.
[5] I have hated the congregation of evil doers;
And will not sit with the wicked.
[6] I will wash mine hands in innocency:
So will I compass thine altar, O LORD:
[7] That I may publish with the voice of thanksgiving,
And tell of all thy wondrous works.
[8] LORD, I have loved the habitation of thy house,
And the place where thine honour dwelleth.
[9] Gather not my soul with sinners,
Nor my life with bloody men:
[10] In whose hands is mischief,
And their right hand is full of bribes.
[11] But as for me, I will walk in mine integrity:
Redeem me, and be merciful unto me.
[12] My foot standeth in an even place:
In the congregations will I bless the LORD.
Judge My Heart
Most people object profusely to being judged. Interestingly, David begins Psalm 26 by boldly asking God to judge him (26:1). He shares reasons why he feels he will be judged favorably by the Lord. He has lived with integrity and has put his trust in the Lord (26:1,3). These behaviors keep him from sliding from righteousness (26:1). Eliciting further judgment, David asks to be examined, proven and tried (26:2). He is confident his heart is right and he will pass tests and trials. Again, David states how he has walked or lived in the truth of God’s loving kindness (26:3). He provides a list of the ways he has stayed away from evil doers (26:5). When he comes before God’s altar, he will be like an innocent sacrifice (26:6). Therefore he is able to tell of God’s wondrous works (26:7). David repeats how he loves the presence of the Lord, and not that of sinners (26:8-9). Reminding God again of his integrity, David asks humbly for God’s redemption and mercy (26:11). He ends with his vow to bless the Lord in the congregations (26:12).
When I find the courage to ask God to search my heart, I admit that I am sometimes afraid of what might be revealed. I never feel I can be bold, like David, and spread my arms wide to say, “Judge me, examine me. I’m an open book.” In truth, I know there are times I, like we all, have sinned and come short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). I thank God that man looks on the outside but He looks on the inside (1 Sam 16:7). He is looking for a humble, repentant and broken spirit, and contrite heart (Psalm 51:17). I pray each day for forgiveness and for I know it is only the blood of Jesus that cleanses me and makes me righteous. Lord, give me a clean heart (Psalm 51:10).
