Psalm 28: 1-9 KJV

A Psalm of David.

[1] Unto thee will I cry, O LORD my rock; be not silent to me:

Lest, if thou be silent to me, I become like them that go down into the pit.

[2] Hear the voice of my supplications, when I cry unto thee,

When I lift up my hands toward thy holy oracle.

[3] Draw me not away with the wicked, and with the workers of iniquity,

Which speak peace to their neighbours, but mischief is in their hearts.

[4] Give them according to their deeds,

And according to the wickedness of their endeavours:

Give them after the work of their hands;

Render to them their desert.

[5] Because they regard not the works of the LORD , nor the operation of his hands,

He shall destroy them, and not build them up.

[6] Blessed be the LORD,

Because he hath heard the voice of my supplications.

[7] The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped:

Therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him.

[8] The LORD is their strength,

And he is the saving strength of his anointed.

[9] Save thy people, and bless thine inheritance:

Feed them also, and lift them up for ever.

Listening for God’s Voice

The agony David feels when he does not hear the voice of the Lord resonates in the first lines of Psalm 28. David says he will cry out to the Lord, his Rock (28:1). God is his strong foundation, his secure place on which to stand. He begs Him to answer his cry: “Be not silent to me” (28:1). David describes his life’s condition if God is silent. He feels as if he is in a deep pit, and he lifts up his hands in supplication for help (28:2). David compares his plight to what God does to the wicked, to those who speak peace but have mischievous hearts (28:3).

These workers of inequity are justly punished for their deeds. “Give them after the works of their hands” (28:4). After all, David believes this is their righteous desert (28:4). But David blesses the Lord because, unlike His silence towards the wicked, God has heard his prayers (28:6). He trusts in the Lord, his strength and shield (28:7). He is filled with song and rejoicing because he is one of God’s anointed people. David was personally anointed to be king and may be recalling that blessed occurrence. David extends his request to God to bless his inheritance. “Feed them, and lift them up for ever” (28:9). The people of God will trust in the lord who hears and answers their prayer

There have been times when I have prayed to God for guidance when I have faced a situation where I did not know what to do. Not wanting to choose the wrong direction or go down the wrong road, like David I cry out to God for an answer. I understand the distress David felt when his cries were met with silence. How unsettling it is to feel you are treading on shaky ground and may fall. It is during this tough time of waiting, that, like David, I hold fast to my faith and trust in God. I listen for His voice in His Word, seeking scriptures that may teach me God’s will.

Ultimately, I consistently and persistently pray, and ask the Holy Spirit to lead and guide me. Like David, I know that God hears me and will answer me, for I am His child, His inheritance. I thank God for being my rock, my strong foundation. I know I can rest in Him and rely on His voice.
